TRIBES OF NORTHERN NAMIBIA AND SOUTH TOUR (14 Days) - CODE SWAS 14

Day 1:

In the morning departure from Windhoek to Tsumeb. At Okahandja, a former mission station and the tribal center of the Herero people, visit some Herero graves, the cemetery of the German “Schutztruppe” and the Kavango woodcarvers market.
Via Otjiwarongo and Otavi continue to Tsumeb. At the “Cultural village”, an open-air museum, visitors get an insight into the rural life of the Namibian people. The display depicts the life, history and culture of the different population groups and includes an exhibition of the different arts and crafts.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at the Makalani Hotel.

Day 2:

After breakfast depart for the “Treespleeper Camp” near Tsintsabis. It is home to Hei//omn Bushmen, the former habitants of Etosha and surroundings, and the !Kung Bushmen. Until recently the Bushmen practiced a lifestyle of hunting and gathering. They will show you their traditional way of life in a “historic living village”.
After a light lunch or lunch packs (not included) proceed to Farm Hedwigslust, home of the Ombili foundation. The aim of the foundation is to teach the 350 Bushmen living on the farm to become self-sufficient as farmers, to sow, produce and harvest crops as an alternative to hunting game, which has become extinct.
The Ombili Foundation relies on donations to finance this project. A gratuity of approximately N$ 50.00 is much appreciated. Depart to Etosha Aoba Lodge bordering the Etosha National Park.

Day 3:

Continue further north to 4-O region, the most densely populated region of Namibia (approximately 600 000 people). The Ovambo consist of 8 sub-tribes. The Nakambale Museum at Olukondo is the first stop, depicting the past and present role of the Finnish Mission, the church and the local cultures. Visit the Ngonga homestead and observe the different demonstrations on wheat crushing, basket weaving, hair braiding, traditional dancing and music etc.
A traditional lunch will be served. Proceed to Oshakati via Ondongwa.

Day 4:

Travel through the Omusati region. Flat, sandy plains dotted with Makalani palms, savannah and Mopane woodlands characterize the landscape. Stop at different attractions.
Continue to Opuwo via Ruacana.
Dinner/ bed/breakfast at the Opuwo Country Hotel.

Day 5:

Visit a typical Himba settlement. The Himba are a subtribe of the Herero people. They are the only tribe still practicing their ancient tradition and culture. They are nomads who roam the area in search of grazing for their cattle. A number of deserted settlements will be seen along the way. A local guide will accompany the group in order to negotiate a visit to a “Kraal” with the headman of the tribe and will explain the lifestyle and the culture of the Himba people.
Return to Opuwo and proceed in southerly direction to Hobatere Lodge at the western border of the Etosha National Park. Enjoy a game drive in the afternoon.

Day 6:

Travel through the western part of the Etosha National Park. The Oryx and other antelopes favour this region. West of Okaukuejo is the wellknown “Sprokieswoud”, Phantom or Fairy Forest, the only place where the African Moringa tree grows in a flat area.
Game viewing continues till late afternoon. At the floodlit waterhole wildlife can be viewed throughout the day and night.

Day 7:

Leave the Etosha National Park after a short game drive in the morning. Return to Windhoek via Outjo, Otjiwarongo and Okahandja. Arrive in Windhoek during the afternoon.
Bed/breakfast at the Safari Court.

Day 8:

Drive from Windhoek via Dordabis, Uhlenhorst and Stampriet through the beautiful scenery of the Kalahari outskirts to Gochas. Afternoon nature drive.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at Kamelruhe Guest House or Stoney's Country Hotel.

Day 9:

Drive to the Kokerboom forest (quivertree), explore the area, continue to Keetmanshoop and proceed past the Naute Dam to the Cañon Lodge.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at Cañon Lodge.

Day 10:

Visit the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. This gigantic ravine, in places almost 500 metres deep, has been gorged out of vast undulating plain in the course of thousands of years.
Proceed to Klein Aus Vista via Seeheim and Aus.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at Desert Horse Inn.

Day 11:

Day visit to Lüderitz, the first German settlement in Namibia, named after the merchant Adolf Lüderitz from Bremen, who bought this area in 1883. This drive takes you through intriguing “moon” landscape of endless desert vistas and bizarre rock formations.
The small harbour town is perched on rugged black rock, offset by the deep blue waters of the bay, and is surrounded by bays, coves and fjords. During the morning visit to the “ghost town” of Kolmanskop where diamonds were first discovered in Namibia. Afterwards sightseeing in and around Lüderitz and return to Klein Aus Vista.

Day 12:

Continue through the scenic Neisip Plain and drive along the edge of the Namib Desert, the Tiras Mountains and the Nubib Mountains to Namib Desert Lodge.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at Namib Desert Lodge.

Day 13:

In the early morning depart on an excursion to the Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei, a large clay pan in the center to the Namib Desert, surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world. Arrive round about lunch time at the Namib Desert Lodge. In the afternoon take part in a dune drive.
Dinner/bed/breakfast at Namib Desert Lodge.

Day 14:

Drive via Remhoogte Pass to Rehoboth and visit the Oanob Dam.
Tour ends in Windhoek.
