With relatively few tarred roads in Namibia, travel is predominantly on dust and gravel roads. Luxury buses in the Neoplan style and those with air suspension are totally unsuitable for Namibian road conditions, given the limited space between the chassis and the road surface. Due to the likelihood of overflowing and unpleasant odours, WC's are also not appropriate for the Namibian vehicles.
In order to overcome the road conditions most favorably, SWA Safaris buses are built on special bus chassis which are considerably higher than the normal bus chassis, allowing the driver to manage the frequent dips, thick sand and gravel much better.
The bodywork is specially built for SWA Safaris in Cape Town.
The interior complies without limitations to the requirements of a luxury bus: ample leg room, reclining "Vogel" seats imported from Germany, a vanity rack and cooler for refreshment drinks.
Each bus has a separate luggage compartment designed and enclosed to restrict dust penetration. Total dust prevention cannot be guaranteed.
As stipulated in the fleet summary above, not all the vehicles in the SWA Safaris Fleet have air conditioning . The reasons for this are twofold.
:: The bumpy road conditions frequently result in the air conditioning unit falling out and more importantly air conditioning is not healthy.
:: En route frequent stops are made for sightseeing and to photograph. The significant difference in temperature in- and outside the bus can easily result in colds, bronchitis and temporary circulatory problems.
Besides this, the noise created by a running air conditioner can be most distracting during game drives.
As the health and well-being of our guests is our primary concern at SWA Safaris, we believe that it is more sensible to equip our buses with forced air ventilation and sliding windows but we must also comply to the wishes of our clients.
